Smoke-Free Living

Smoke-Free Living logo

Johnson County residents deserve healthier, safer places to live in multi-unit housing.

Secondhand smoke is not safe at any level and it's especially not safe for children.

Although a smoke-free policy in multi-unit housing is not required by law, many renters are demanding smoke-free living spaces and landlords are responding to the market for smoke-free clean, healthy homes.

Many renters already know and the Centers for Disease Control has confirmed that secondhand smoke can seep through air ducts, cracks in flooring and walks, stairwells, hallways, elevator shafts, plumbing, electrical lines and open windows.

What is in Secondhand Smoke?

7,000 chemicals including arsenic, cyanide and about 70 chemicals that are known to cause cancer.

-U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2012

Up to 60% of airflow in multi-unit housing can come from other units. Protect you, your family, your guests and even your pets from secondhand smoke.
